LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1970 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air IV
The 1970 model year marked a bold new direction for Pontiac, introducing the completely redesigned second-generation Trans Am—longer, lower, and far more aggressive in both styling and performance. With its functional shaker hood, front and rear spoilers, and race-inspired stance, the Trans Am was engineered to dominate both the street and the track. At the top of the performance hierarchy sat the legendary Ram Air IV option, widely regarded as the most potent and sophisticated factory engine Pontiac ever installed in a production muscle car.
Under the hood, the Ram Air IV 400 cubic-inch V8 was a no-compromise high-performance engine, factory-rated at 370 horsepower but widely understood to produce significantly more. Featuring high-flow round-port cylinder heads, a radical camshaft, aluminum intake manifold, and functional ram air induction, the RAIV was designed with racing in mind—delivering explosive top-end power and unmistakable character. Backed by the M40 automatic transmission, this example offers a rare combination of brute performance and drivability, with only 29 produced.
Of the mere 88 Ram Air IV Trans Ams built for 1970, just 64 were assembled at the Norwood, Ohio, plant, placing this example among an already elite subset of one of Pontiac’s most exclusive muscle cars. Its rarity is matched by its provenance, having been sold new through Johnson Pontiac in Clinton, Iowa, and today accompanied by Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) documentation verifying its factory specifications and authenticity.
This particular Trans Am has also earned recognition within the hobby, having been featured on the cover and in the pages of High Performance Pontiac magazine—an honor reserved for only the finest and most significant examples.
Following a previous body-off restoration the car has remained in a private collection, it was returned to factory-correct standards with great attention to detail. Every component has been carefully restored or refinished, from the highly detailed undercarriage to the engine bay, ensuring quality throughout. The result is a show-quality example that accurately reflects how these cars appeared when new, while maintaining the integrity expected of a top-tier collector vehicle.
The 1970 Ram Air IV Trans Am represents the pinnacle of Pontiac’s muscle car era—combining extreme rarity, documented history, and uncompromising performance. For collectors, it stands as one of the most coveted American muscle cars ever produced, and an essential centerpiece in any serious collection.
