The story of the 427 Cobra begins with Carroll Shelby’s relentless pursuit of performance. While the earlier 289 Cobras were already dominating the competition, Shelby anticipated that Enzo Ferrari would respond with something faster. Knowing the limits of the small-block platform had been reached, Shelby made the bold decision to dramatically increase power.
The result was the legendary 427 Cobra—a machine built around a significantly strengthened and widened chassis to handle the immense torque of Ford’s big-block V8. While retaining much of the original 289’s iconic shape, including its doors, hood, and windscreen, the 427 introduced wider fenders and a more aggressive stance.
In total, just 316 original 427 Cobras were produced, including 19 full Competition models, 31 S/C variants, and 260 street cars. The 427 Cobra quickly earned its reputation as the definitive evolution of the breed—delivering more power, more capability, and more presence than anything that came before it.
