1972 Maserati Indy - 4.7 litre V8 with 5 speed, Rare Euro GT
LMC is proud to offer for sale this 1972 Maserati Indy
The Maserati Indy is a four-seater fastback Grand Tourer produced by Italian car manufacturer Maserati from 1969 to 1975. Since 1920, the famous trident Maserati logo has been recognized for sports car excellence with the shield based on the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore. This is very significant since Neptune represents strength and vigour plus the statue is a characteristic symbol of the company's original home city. The car was christened Indy in honour of Maserati's two victories at the Indy 500. The Indy’s styling was the brainchild of Giovanni Michelotti, working for Turin’s Vignale coachworks. Vignale had been responsible for the 3500 GT Spyder, the Mexico and Sebring. The Indy was envisaged to provide a comfortable, roomier, more practical four-seater grand touring with good luggage space as well as great speed and performance. Strikingly beautiful design lines, the exterior was especially pleasing due to a smooth front nose incorporating pop-up headlights and ensuring a low drag factor with superior stability at high speeds while the aerodynamic fastback provided the benefit of a tailgate making access to the spacious loading area all the more convenient. At its launch in 1969 the Indy was offered with a 4.2-litre V8 engine. From 1970, a 4.7-litre version, the Indy 4700 with 290 hp was offered alongside the 4200, which was later followed by the Indy 4900 so equipped with the 4.9-litre V8. The engines were Maserati's own all-aluminium, four overhead cam and were fed by four Weber 42 DCNF twin-choke carburettors. According to factory claims, the Indy 4.7’s top speed was 162 mph with very respectable 0 to 60 in 6.6 and the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds making the Indy among the world’s fastest 4-seater cars in its day. Power steering became standard as did the air conditioning system and four wheel disc brakes. The successful Indy was the last of the big, naturally aspirated V8-engined traditional GT cars from Maserati. The front suspension was independent with double wishbones, coil springs and an anti-roll bar; the rear has a live axle and leaf springs, a single longitudinal torque arm and an anti-roll bar. Production of Maserati cars is traditionally low and only made to order. Production of the Indy ended in 1975 with only a total of 1,104 produced in all forms -- for 1972 only 246 cars were produced.
This 1972 Maserati Indy is stunningly beautiful in the Fastback Coupe design. Originally, a European delivered Indy, this car has enjoyed a very good life with only one owner dating back to the early 1980’s. The lines are enhanced with the color combo of the traditional Italian Red on Beige interior. The Red paint has been polished to reveal great depth and reflective shine and has classic look against the beige leather interior upholstery which remains in very good original condition. The handsome dashboard was true Gran Tourismo with a three-spoked adjustable steering wheel and nice chrome trimmed gauges - all of these items being in good original condition. There is no doubt that it was the side profile of the Indy that best demonstrated Vignale's clever design. The front elevation with its full width slim wrap around front chrome bumper and the use of stylish retractable headlights while a full width rear window incorporated into an almost horizontal hatch flows down to a short tail. The exterior trim pieces and front and rear chrome bumpers, which shine nicely, are all in good, damage free, original condition. The black undercarriage, though not detailed, has factory rust proofing which has played a role in preserving this car.
This Maserati Indy offers the car collector a wonderful opportunity to acquire a car from this famous marque. A lovely European GT design with a great color combination and a rare find to consider if found anywhere, but, especially true for the one we are offering here.
