LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1971 Oldsmobile 442 W30 Convertible

As the early 1970s brought tightening emissions standards, skyrocketing insurance premiums, unleaded fuel mandates, and mounting political pressure, the golden era of the American muscle car was drawing to a close. Yet in 1971, Oldsmobile held its ground with one last, brilliant effort—the sophisticated but brutally powerful 442.

That year, the 442 was offered exclusively with 455-cubic-inch V-8 power. True to its reputation, “Dr. Oldsmobile,” the fictional mad scientist of period advertisements, still managed to extract serious performance from the big-block. The legendary W-30 option was conservatively rated at 350 gross horsepower, though actual output was far stronger than advertised, keeping insurance companies guessing. With the W-30, the 442 was fully capable of quarter-mile times under 15 seconds, and when paired with the Muncie four-speed manual and 3.42:1 axle ratio, acceleration was even more exhilarating.

The example presented here is one of only 32 Oldsmobile 442 Convertibles built in 1971 with the prized combination of the W-30 engine and four-speed transmission. Delivered new through Royal Pontiac-Olds in Butler, New Jersey, it left the factory finished in striking Saturn Gold with black stripes. Beyond its drivetrain, it was optioned with a Hurst shifter, heavy-duty 3.73:1 Positraction rear axle, W27 aluminum axle cover, “Rocket Rally” gauges, “Tic-Toc-Tach,” bucket seats, center console, and sport steering wheel.

Throughout its life, this car has passed through the hands of respected collectors and its restoration was entrusted to noted Oldsmobile expert Joe Cubellis of New Castle, Pennsylvania, who carried out an exceptionally accurate, detail-focused restoration. The car is accompanied by impressive documentation, including copies of the build sheet, dealer invoice, Protect-O-Plate, and the owner’s manual. Even the Goodyear Polyglas GT tires remain faithful to factory correctness.

This 1971 442 W-30 Convertible—among the rarest and most desirable configurations produced—represents the proud final chapter of that legacy. For any serious muscle car collection, it is a definitive, must-have piece of Oldsmobile performance history.
