1970 Mustang BOSS 302
Head turning "Grabber Blue" paint, thorough restoration and real American muscle performance
The pony car rivalry had begun in 1967 with the introduction of the Chevrolet Camaro by General Motors. The Camaro gave Ford its first real competition since introduction of the Mustang in 1964. However revenge was sweet with the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302. The name was inspired by Ford stylist Larry Shinoda, who had a nickname among Ford employees of "Boss" and 302 was the motor to power this legendary mustang.
This 1970 Boss 302, presented in correct Grabber Blue paint and accented with sharp black stripes is a great looking car. Black accents continue on the vehicle with functional front and rear spoilers and fast back style louvers. Under the hood, the Boss's high-output 302 V-8 was said to produce 290 horsepower at 4600 rpm, actual output was estimated to be far higher. Mated to the motor is the optional wide ratio 4 speed manual. Ford spared no expense to ensure this would be a Trans-Am-worthy powerplant, installing new "dry-deck" Cleveland-style heads with 2.33-inch intake valves and no head gaskets, solid lifters, an aluminum high-riser manifold, super-high-flow Holley four-barrel carburetor, high-capacity dual-point ignition, four-bolt central-main-bearing caps, cross-drilled forged crankshaft, and special pistons.
This Grabber Blue Boss 302 was resurrected by performing a frame-off restoration on both the drivetrain and the body. Upon completion the Boss enjoyed attention from various car shows and was featured in the October, 2004 edition of the Mustang monthly. The magazine article cites that "all the restoration work was performed meticulously with untold hours spent simply doing intricate handwork on areas that will never even be seen. This was much more than a frame off restoration. Over 4,000 hours were spent during 21 months to restore the Boss." The Marti report, the featured Mustang Monthly magazine and every step of the restoration process is well photographed and is present with the vehicle.
While the Boss 302 in 1970 was mass produced to draw crowds into Ford dealerships, this particular example is only one of just 290 Boss 302s in Grabber Blue and optioned with the wide ratio 4-speed transmission. In summary, this Boss 302 is the type of car that anyone can turn the key and have a great time with. This Boss 302 has been fortunate enough to have been saved from the inevitability of time, and the new owner will be equally fortunate to drive it home and call it their own.
