Challenger, Dodge's answer to the Mustang created "Pony Car" segment. Introduced for the 1970 model year, it was one of two Chrysler E-body cars, the other being the slightly smaller Plymouth Barracuda/Cuda. Competition was fierce in the muscle car war and both these cars were available in a staggering number of trim and option levels as well as virtually every engine in Chrysler's inventory.

Chrysler intended the new 1970 Dodge to be the most potent pony car ever and positioned it to compete against the Mercury Cougar, Pontiac Firebird and other more luxury-type muscle cars. Dodge differed enough from the Plymouth in its outer sheet metal just like the Cougar differed from the shorter-wheelbase Ford Mustang. The Challenger was available as a two-door in either a hardtop coupe or a convertible body design. There were two models for its introductory year - base model Challenger and Challenger R/T. The Special Edition (SE) added a number of appearance, convenience, and comfort items such as leather seats, vinyl roof, smaller 'formal' rear window and an overhead interior console that contained three warning lights for door ajar, low fuel and seatbelts. The SE was available in either the Challenger or Challenger R/T.

This Dodge Challenger R/T-S/E, an early build on November 11, 1969, is certainly a rare version of this model being 1 of 161 built with the 440-6 coupled with an automatic transmission.
