1970 Chevrolet Chevelle - LS5 454 Turbo Jet, M22 4-Speed, Factory A/C

LMC is proud to offer for sale this 1970 Chevelle SS LS5 Convertible.

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a midsize muscle car which was produced in three generations for the 1964 through 1977 model years with the second generation from ’68 to ‘72. In 1970, sheet metal revisions gave the bodies a more squared-up stance that certainly portrayed the very important high performance muscle car image. The 1970 Chevelle came in Sport Coupe, Sport Sedan, Convertible, Four-door Sedan, ‘wagon and El Camino body styles. 1970 also saw the introduction of the wildly popular 454 cid engine and was only available with the RPO Z15 SS Equipment option. The base LS5 454 cid engine, 7.4L in today’s term, was rated at 360 HP which was also available with the very desirable and functional Cowl Induction Hood while the optional LS6 version like so many big blocks at the time was underrated at 450 HP. "You can make our tough one even tougher," the Chevy brochure explained, by adding Cowl Induction to either the SS 396 or the SS 454. Step on the gas, and a scoop opened "to shoot an extra breath of cool air into the engine air intake....like second wind to a distance runner." Neither functional hood lock pins nor hood and deck stripes were standard with either SS option, but were part of the optional ZL2 cowl induction hood option.

One of the aspects that make collector cars of the 60’s and 70’s so intriguing was the consumer's’ ability to select every fine detail of their car. Not like modern cars where you are given packages to choose from, if you wanted a stripped down car with bench seats and a big block, or a fully loaded convertible, it could be done by checking the correct boxes on the order form. The beautifully restored 1970 Chevelle SS Convertible we have to offer is just such an example!

This ’70 Chevelle SS LS5 Convertible life began at the Baltimore MD assembly line on January 21st of 1970.  The original owner walked into Sausman Chevrolet in Lemoyne PA and placed an order for a Fathom Blue Chevelle SS Convertible with the newly introduced 454 LS5 engine and an M22 “Rockcrusher” 4-Speed Manual Transmission. This Chevelle is a fabulous looking muscle car in its factory Fathom Blue with White Sport Stripes, Medium Blue Bucket Seat interior and a nicely fitting Black Convertible power soft top. Making the car even more unique were the other options he selected including Blue Bucket Seat interior with Center Console, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Convertible Top, Sport Stripes, AM Radio with 8 Track Tape, special instrumentation including factory Tach, Front Bumper Guards and perhaps the most special of all, factory Air Conditioning. The comfort of 4-Season AC system has to be one of the most desirable and extremely rare option to find on any muscle car of the era. All these special and desirable options make it one of just a handful ever produced by the factory.  The first owner would enjoy the car keep it until 1983 before changing hands for the first time. Over the years, the subsequent owners have been in touch and kept excellent records of complete ownership history and documentation.  Some of which includes; Owner’s Manual and Protect-O-Plate, copies of the original dealer invoices, pre order sheet, window sticker, to restoration pictures and old photos dating back to when the car was only a few months old.  There are letters from previous owners attesting to the time during their ownership, complete dossier of pictures documenting the part numbers and notes and timelines of telephone conversation with previous owners and previous titles and registrations.  Recognizing what a special car this was, it was treated to a complete frame off restoration with a great attention to detail, the undercarriage shows beautifully, as well as the engine bay as does the Blue Bucket Seats interior. The Fathom Blue paint that has been wet sanded and polished to a mirror like finish. Open the Cowl Induction Hood and see the beautifully detailed numbers matching LS5 454 connected to the numbers matching M22 4-Speed Manual Transmission. This very special Chevelle convertible has led a comfortable life clearly, having been well taken care of by everyone privileged enough to be the owner.  Now it awaits the next stage in its life, whether part of a major collection or used for Sunday cruises, it will certainly be a valued addition for years to come!

Looking at this wonderful ’70 Chevelle SS LS5 Convertible and you can appreciate the bold Chevrolet advertisement that stated ‘In ten seconds your resistance will self-destruct’. In other words your search for a Chevelle Convertible that is simply one of the most revered icon of all muscle cars has been successful!  It's most commonly believed and thought that these LS5 454 cars with the 4 speed manual transmission complete with factory air conditioning were produced in such low numbers that they are even rarer the coveted LS6 convertible.
