1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454/450HP LS6 Convertible Extremely Rare
This Chevelle SS 454 LS6 Convertible has been proudly added to our special collection.
Chevelle, the mid-sized Chevrolet produced for three generations from 1964-77. The first generation was intended to compete with the Ford Fairlane and provide the Chevy lineup a model similar in size and concept to their popular 1955-6-7 models. The Chevelle SS represented Chevrolet's entry into the muscle car battle. During the second generation of 1968-72, the Chevelle was billed as "America's most popular mid-size car." In 1970, the biggest change was the end of GM's corporate edict forbidding larger than 400 cubic inches in the intermediate models - Chevrolet's 'big block V8' was enlarged to a mammoth 454 and formed the basis of the LS6 option. The ultimate 'bowtie' weapon was designed to help Chevrolet wrest control of Super Stock drag racing from the Hemi-powered Chryslers. The base 454 cid engine was rated at 360 hp which was also available with cowl induction hood , however the optional LS6 version rated at 450 hp was the highest horsepower rating ever given to a production car at the time. Many believed it was still underrated and actually produced over 500HP. Sheet metal revisions gave the '70 bodies a more squared-up stance along with redesigned stylish interiors. Chevrolet built a total of 53,599 Chevelle Super Sports in 1970, of which 8,773 were SS 454s. Of those, 4,475 included the LS6 option, with the overwhelming majority built as two-door coupes. According to author Robert Genat in his book Chevy SS: 50 Years of Super Sport, exact production figures for the 1970 LS6 Convertible are not known, but it is thought to be under 200 units . Mike Mueller states in his book Chevelle: Collector's Library that production estimates range from 20 to 80. Regardless, this is one rare production automobile and one of the "holy grails" to muscle car collectors. The LS6 Chevelle SS became a legend for those who appreciate its all-American style, power and prestige.
Ads of the day suggested the Chevelle "performance starts as soon as you're seated."
This Chevelle is arguably the ultimate, most desirable Chevrolet muscle car and is very rare being one of fewer than 200 LS6 Convertibles built in 1970. Striking in Misty Turquoise Metallic over Ivory interior this is a genuine four-speed LS6. This LS6 Chevelle was previously part of the legendary collection of Milton Robson who was known for his discerning tastes and collecting only the best muscle cars. He acquired the car in March 1991 from another well-known muscle car collector, Carl Dwiggins, who meticulously restored the Chevelle from the ground up. During the restoration, the original broadcast sheet was found, and despite being in less than perfect condition, it confirms the LS6 engine as being part of this car's original equipment.
Power under the hood is the legendary talking point of the LS6 Chevelle. The big block motor produced an advertised 450 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque, which were some of the highest performance numbers of the muscle car era. Keep in mind this was a factory option that anybody could walk in, make a few check marks on the Chevrolet dealer order form for only an extra $263.30 on the window sticker. The numbers match orange Big Block 454 LS6 engine sits in a nicely finished black engine bay. The 454 has a large Holley four-barrel carburetor sitting under a large chrome air cleaner displaying the 454 Turbo Jet 450HP decals between the bright chrome valve covers. Power is hooked up to a Muncie M-22 heavy-duty four-speed manual transmission and stopping is provided by four-wheel drum brakes. Overall the engine bay is immaculate and well detailed. Performance was very good as Hot Rod magazine tested the car at the time and reported a 13.44-second quarter-mile at a speed of 108 mph. The tester noted the biggest problem was trying to get the tires to hook up, as any stab of the throttle caused them to go up in smoke.
This SS LS6 is captivating in Misty Turquoise Metallic (Code 34), with a white convertible top. Along with the Ivory interior makes for a unique and striking color combination. There are two unique features of this car: the stripe delete and the cowl-induction delete which were no doubt both the original owner's choices. They make this SS definitely one of the great sleepers of the muscle car era.
The Misty Turquoise metallic paint is simply stunning. This is a colour designed with a lot of metallic flake and it absolutely sparkles in direct light. Combined with the Ivory seats and door panels as well as the contrasting white top, it truly is a very unique colour combo. Its the perfect choice by the original owner, for what would end up being such a unique car with a low production run. The appropriate white letter Goodyear Polyglas tires ride on Magnum 500 wheels. The bright work, including door handles, mirrors and window surrounds all have a wonderful deep reflection . This car has certainly been treated, having such a thorough restoration; an up close inspection will confidently back this up. Moving to the interior, Chevy provided a wonderful Ivory colour, an inspired choice for this rare example. The optional Strato-bucket seats have beautiful detailed design and are in great condition while contrasting nicely with the black carpet. They provide the driver with comfort while gripping the factory black steering wheel and the original Shifter. A pleasing view of the conveniently mounted AM radio, clock and full instrumentation within the all-black dash that is in superb condition just like when the buyer in '70 sat in the same driver seat.
This Chevelle has it all: the one-year-only powerful LS6 engine, a four-speed transmission, a dynamic color combination, documentation, a superb restoration, proper care, and perhaps most important of all, rarity and exclusivity among muscle cars. The 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 454 is a true holy grail of the muscle-car era, a one-year-only mix of style and performance that produced the mightiest Chevelle ever!
