1970 Buick GS Stage 1

LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 Convertible

  In 1965, Buick began offering a Gran Sport version of its popular Skylark model. With Buick more positioned as a comfort and luxury brand within General Motors at the time, the creation of a higher-performance Gran Sport version of the Skylark was a move to capitalize on the public’s growing demand for American muscle cars. Outfitted with a 401/325 HP Nailhead V-8, more than 15,000 Gran Sport’s were sold that first year, ultimately resulting in the Gran Sport becoming its own Buick model designation in 1967. By 1970, the Buick Gran Sport had received a newly restyled body and was available with several different performance options. 

  The example on offer here is a factory 1970 GS Stage 1 convertible equipped with the potent Stage 1 455/360 HP high-performance engine. Based on Buick’s 455 CI V-8, the Stage 1 package included specially machined cylinder heads that featured larger valves, higher compression and improved flow. Coupled with a hotter camshaft and 4-barrel Quadra jet carburetor, the Stage 1 V-8 produced 360 HP. 

  This Stage 1 GS convertible is only one of just 164 examples produced in 1970 and was sold new at Bill Dreiling Buick in Lakewood, Colorado on December 15th, 1969. Factory finished in Glacier White with a black interior and soft top, this Stage 1 convertible was highly optioned from the dealer including tinted glass, am radio, rear speaker, door guards, remote mirror, power steering, power steering and air conditioning. Under the hood remains the numbers matching Stage 1 455ci engine producing 360hp/510ft.-lbs backed by the console shifted Turbo 400 transmission. 

  After being used in SPEED Network TV special Dream Car Garage – "Muscle Car Shootout" one of our long-term customers instantly purchased the car from LMC and commissioned a complete nut and bolt frame off rotisserie restoration. This car was used as a feature restoration on Dream Car Garage and not only was the car to be restored to the highest show standards but also with the intent to be functional and reliable. All these goals were achieved, as it performed flawlessly in the Muscle Car 1000 and several other rallies across North America. 

  Included in the sale of this rare Buick are the owner’s manual, dealer brochures and GS Historical Documentation which documents the original options.  With limited examples produced, this presents a truly unique opportunity to purchase a very rare and special Buick with great history.
