1969 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV Convertible - 1 of Only 45 Built

LMC is proud to offer for sale this 1969 Pontiac GTO Convertible.

The Pontiac GTO was built by the Pontiac Division of GM from 1964 to 1974 as part of the mid-sized Pontiac Tempest/LeMans lineup. GTO was a muscle car that many consider to have started the trend that had all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.

The GTO was the brainchild of Pontiac engineer Russell Gee, engine specialist Bill Collins, and chief engineer John DeLorean. By the early 1960s, Pontiac’s advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance however with GM’s ban on factory-sponsored racing then Pontiac’s young, visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. The 1969 model eliminated the front door vent windows, had a slight grille and taillight revision, moved the ignition key from the dashboard to the steering column for the new locked steering wheel requirement and the gauge faces changed from steel blue to black. In addition, the rear quarter-panel mounted side marker lamps changed from a red lens shaped like the Pontiac “V” crest to one shaped like the broad GTO badge. The styling feature of the very desirable hide away headlights, unique to ‘68 and ‘69 model years, hid within the Endura bumper surround. As for the famous GTO name that was DeLorean’s idea inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato which means officially certified for racing in the grand tourer class. On the street, the muscle car fans affectionately refer to the GTO’s as the ‘Goat’.

This Pontiac GTO is an ultra-rare one of only 45 produced as a Ram Air IV Four-Speed Convertible. It has received a full frame off nut and bolt rotisserie restoration. Finished in factory correct Code 57 Midnight Green paint, with White Convertible top and Code 257 Parchment interior. The numbers matching engine is the legendary 400 cu in Ram Air IV conservatively rated at 370HP and 445 ft-lbs. Performance was reported to be 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and quarter mile at 101.5mph in 13.9 seconds. The factory installed Hurst Performance gear shifter is mounted in the console. This package also has the Ram Air Hood Scoops with the Pontiac Hood-mounted Tachometer. This rare GTO is also equipped with the very desirable Hurst Mag wheels, so it looks like no other Pontiac. The interior has the bucket seats. Other features, as per the PHS documentation, include Power Disc Brakes, Power Steering, AM/FM Radio/Power Antenna, Remote Mirror, Safe-T-track rear differential with 3.90 ratio and close ratio M21 Muncie transmission.

A definite legend from the street muscle era this 1969 Pontiac GTO offers great styling, convertible fun and 400 Ram Air IV performance grunt for any challenges at the lights.
