1969 AMC S/C Rambler Scrambler - Beautifully Restored, "A" Paint Scheme
LMC is proud to offer for sale this 1969 AMC Hurst SC/Rambler.
By 1969, the muscle car wars were in full swing, with Ford, General Motors, and the Chrysler Corporation offering seemingly endless combinations of large-displacement, high-output engines in everything from compact unibody grocery-getters to full size, full frame, road-trip ready family sedans. As the Sixties drew to a close and engineers grew more proficient at fitting larger engines into smaller cars, larger performance vehicles like 427 Impalas, Hemi Satellites, and 7-litre Galaxies fell out of favour. After all, if you could have the same horsepower with less weight, why not?
Why not indeed. For 1969, AMC, the smallest Detroit automaker, decided to try their hand at a compact muscle car to compete with the Big Three’s offerings. While the Javelin, launched the previous year, was positioned against the GM F-body twins, the Ford Mustang/Mercury Cougar, Camaro and the Plymouth Barracuda, AMC built a new performance model based on the almost comically simple Rogue compact that would compete with the Chevrolet Nova and other compact performance cars. With the assistance of Hurst, a simple formula was devised: take one AMC Rogue, add a 390 cubic inch, 315 horsepower V8, a BorgWarner T-10 four-speed manual with obligatory Hurst shifter, and a limited slip differential with a 3.54:1 final drive ratio. Garnish with a spectacular patriotic paint scheme and launch the result in mid-1968 for the 1969 model year, dubbed the Hurst SC/Rambler.
This example is finished in the “A” paint scheme and is considered the most attractive and sought after version of the Red, White and Blue Hurst Scrambler. This particular S/C Rambler has benefitted from a complete rotisserie restoration, with glass-like paint, detailed undercarriage and a well appointed black interior. The 8,000 RPM Sun Tach is present and correct, while the chunky Hurst shifter is as clean as the rest of the car. The interior is complete with colour-coordinated head rests to liven up the no-nonsense black motif. Underneath the functional ram-air hood lies AMC’s potent 390 cubic inch engine, rated at 315 horsepower and 425 ft. Lbs. The engine looks immaculate, with truly beautiful blue metallic paint adorning its cast iron surfaces. The extra-tall ram air cleaner assembly is restored as well, ready and eager to stuff as much air into the cylinders beneath it as it can. Underneath, the car retains its correct front disc brakes and factory subframe connectors. It is well detailed and finished in it white, with detailed front and rear suspension. Finally, matching blue wheels shod with bias ply redline tires deliver the power to the pavement.
This car is genuinely spectacular, hard to find and would be right at home in any muscle car or AMC collection. Don’t miss out!
