1968 Mustang Fastback – BULLITT
LMC is proud to offer for sale this 1968 Mustang Fastback Highland Green “Bullitt”.
Ford completed the first redesign of the legendary Mustang for the ’67 model year with improved dimensions to allow the installation of a big-block – the Thunderbird 390. Most noticeable exterior design changes were the larger/deeper grill mouth and concave tail lights. Ford then provided minor changes for the second model year in ‘68 focused on safety such as the two-spoke energy-absorbing steering wheel, shoulder belts and the side markers. These ‘Stangs had serious muscle grunt for the street with a 390 GT and 4-Speed Manual Transmission having quarter mile times of approximately 13 seconds at over 105 mph.
Away from the showroom the Mustang received a mega marketing jolt of popularity when the 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback reached iconic status in the film Bullitt. This movie featured Steve McQueen, the highest paid Hollywood actor of the day, known as “The King of Cool”. He was Lt. Frank Bullitt of the San Francisco Police Department who drove a modified 1968 Mustang GT 2+2 Fastback. The film contains arguably the most well-known and very best car chase of all time…a cinema legend that all car chase sequences since have been measured against. This was a high-speed muscle car chase through the famous hilly streets of San Francisco and out onto the highway. Good Cop Steve McQueen in a Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT Fastback outduels the bad guy hitmen in their 1968 Black Dodge Charger 440 Magnum. Fabulous chase thriller that all car crazy people can enjoy but just don’t worry about how many hubcaps come off the Charger and by the way the great reverse burnout during the chase actually wasn't in the script – Mr. Cool simply missed the turn but the footage was still kept.
Today many 1968 Mustang Fastbacks have been taken from their original FoMoCo specifications and transformed into a “Bullitt” Mustang this wonderful example is correct in every detail.
This 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback is an immaculate recreation of the Highland Green Bullitt that will satisfy your desire to be cool-like-McQueen. This dream car looks ready to chase bad guys in a Black Charger or scare off any street light warriors. Powered by a rebuilt date coded ’68 390 GT V8. The intake is a rare original ‘S’ 390 GT manifold with Holley carburettor. The 4-Speed Transmission is a correct date coded Top Loader with a Hurst Shifter. To harness the power the front brakes are now power disc and not the original stock drum brakes. The wheels delivering the ground pounding power are the American Racing Torque Thrust D as used in the movie with bite from the Firestone Indy radials. There are numerous exterior and interior changes to authenticate this beautiful Bullitt recreation as per the movie. Exterior look achieved with the removal of familiar Mustang pieces including the GT Fog Lights, the running-pony grille emblem, the Mustang lettering, and even the GT badges. Body color side moldings and on the driver’s door is a Yankee Metals mirror painted in body color that replaced the stock Mustang side mirror. Outback the rear taillight panel is Satin Black as are the taillight bezels while the rear valance has no back up lights and the GT exhaust holes are plugged just above the exiting straight dual pipes. Inside the Deluxe Black interior with the overhead console, the GT Floor Console has been eliminated and there is the fold down rear seat. The correct steering wheel is the leather wrapped ‘67 Shelby Cobra GT 500 wheel. The stock AM Radio with kick panel speakers having the correct broken antenna as per the movie car. In addition this Fastback, although won’t be jumping through the air above San Francisco's hilly pavement, does have a fully detailed undercarriage. The final authentic tribute touch for this Bullitt Mustang is the JJZ 109 California plate that Lt. Frank had on his car.
One of the most recognized muscle cars of the era this Bullitt ’68 Mustang honors the legend.
