1968 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe- Early Production, Numbers Matching L71 427/435hp Engine
LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1968 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435hp
After some delays due to teething troubles, Larry Shinoda’s radical Mako Shark concept became the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray for 1968, also known as the Corvette C3. Significantly revised from the linear C2 with its knife-edge beltline, the new model featured a T-top option for the coupe and a tunnel rear window, which was removable. The front sloped steeply with pop-up headlights, and fenders were sharply crowned, creating the impression that the car was lower. The new model rode on the same wheelbase but, was seven inches longer and had a Kamm tail. There were also four 427 cubic-inch big-block engines to choose from, offering 390 bhp (L36), 400 bhp (L68), and 435 bhp (L71) – the latter with triple carburetors and the option of alloy heads.
On December 29th, 1967 this beautiful early production 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L71 427/435hp coupe was built and sold new at H.E. Baher Chevrolet in Manhattan Beach, California. Factory ordered in the classic color combination of code 974 Rally Red with standard Black interior. The car was ordered with the powerhouse L71 427/435hp engine backed by a M21 Close Ratio 4-speed manual transmission, power steering, power brakes, posi rear axle, tinted glass, bright metal wheel covers, red stripe F70x15 tires, AM/FM radio, speed warning and telescopic steering.
One thing is for certain when inspecting the car today, this low mile example remains in exquisite original condition today undoubtedly due to the care and attention it has received from its previous owners. Since then it is remarkable how well the car presents itself having had only one repaint during its lifetime. The numbers matching 427/435hp engine is complete with all its smog equipment and attached to the numbers matching transmission. Along with the car is a full list of documentation including Protect-O-Plate, Owner’s Manual, NCRS shipping data report. Featured in Corvette Fever magazine and in the C3 Registry Member Calendar as well as used a reference in the 5th Edition of the NCRS 68-69 Corvette Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide.
This car today represents a remarkable opportunity to add to your garage a very special Corvette, one which is an accurate representation of what was produced in 1968 and with the history and documentation to go with it.
