1968 AMC AMX - Factory 390, Factory Matador Red, Very Nicely Restored

LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1968 AMC AMX

In a 1966 Detroit meeting of the Society of Automotive Engineers, American Motors Corporation officials introduced a compact prototype short-wheelbase two-seat coupe with fastback styling. Named “AMX,” the “pushcar” prototype soon found its way into automotive periodicals where it was lavished with praise. The AMXs came standard with a 290-cid/225-hp V-8. From there, buyers could take one step up to the 343-cid/280-hp V-8, or a 315-lb. 390-cid power plant that gave the little coupe a 10.8 lbs.-per-horsepower ratio. The short 97-inch wheelbase cut the 390-powered AMX’s curb weight to 3,205 lbs. Car and Driver found this combination good for a 6.6 second 0-to-60 mph time. The 390 AMX did fish-tail down the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds at 95 mph with a top speed estimated at 122 mph.

The fastback body was factory factory ordered code 39A Matador Red accented with white hood stripes. Inside is a trim 831A black bucket-seat interior with a wood-grain steering wheel. In the one-piece injection-molded dash is the optional AM radio, factory air conditioning and a 140 MPH speedometer. The main focal point is the top of the line 390/315hp engine which is backed the “Shift-Command” three speed automatic transmission. It also is optioned with power brakes and power steering for better drivability. The engine bay is nicely detailed in appropriate finishes and colors, including corporate turquoise paint on the block itself.  Styled 5-spoke road wheels and the body-color complementing redline bias ply tires complete this classic performance machine.

This nicely restored 1968 AMC AMX is the perfect cruiser to take to your local car show. It was factory with the right options to make this AMX the perfect cruiser. With these characteristics and nicely restored, this AMX is an enthusiast’s dream.
