The "Rent-a-Racer" program provided by Shelby and Hertz was a promotional idea to get the Shelby Mustang in the hands of car enthusiasts to really show off the cars potential. It worked, almost too well!! The stories are still rampant about cars being rented on Friday, having their engines used in personal race cars, the Shelby's themselves having full roll cages installed for the weekend for racing, and people replacing the Hi-Po Shelby engine for a generic Ford 289 4 barrel and returning it to Hertz!!!

The story of this particular 1966 Shelby GT350H begins when it arrived at S&C Motors in San Francisco California in February of 1966 to dealer prep before heading off to a Hertz agency, also in San Francisco. It was delivered with all the options one would expect such as radio and of course the chrome Magnum wheels. By March of the following year the car returned to Shelby American in Los Angeles before being sold through Holiday Ford in Sunnyvale California. Fast forward to 1984 and the car would be acquired by an individual who would ultimately have the car for almost three decades, only just recently relinquishing ownership. Recently the car was treated to a complete rotisserie restoration in its correct livery of white with black interior. The numbers matching Hi-Po 289 motor has been beautifully detailed along with the Hertz Magum wheels and Goodyear Blue Streak tires. The undercarriage was properly finished in red oxide primer with white body colour over spray and of course factory replicated chaulk and paint daubs. The car also comes with a binder of information showing the details of the restoration, a breakdown of owner history and more.
