1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 H

The “Rent-a-Racer” program provided by Shelby and Hertz was a promotional idea to get the Shelby Mustang in the hands of car enthusiasts to really show off the cars potential. It worked, almost too well!! The stories are still rampant about cars being rented on Friday, having their engines used in personal race cars, the Shelby’s themselves having full roll cages installed for the weekend for racing, and people replacing the Hi-Po Shelby engine for a generic Ford 289 4 barrel and returning it to Hertz!!!

The story of this particular 1966 Shelby GT350H begins when it arrived at Hi-Performance Motors in El Segundo, California in February of 1966 to dealer prep before heading off to a Hertz agency, in Los Angeles, California. This early production Hertz car was delivered with all the options one would expect such as radio, chrome Magnum wheels and factory Shelby dash tachometer. It is thought to be one of the very few rare factory delivered in Wimbledon White with Lemans Blue stripes. As listed in the Shelby registry and with further research together with SAAC, it is believed that 18 Hertz cars came equipped with the Lemans Blue stripes and this car has all the indications of being one of those cars.

This GT350 has lived its life on the west coast and is a nice original example having never been fully restored. The numbers matching Hi-Po 289/306 HP is backed by a C4 automatic transmission which performs beautifully. The Magnum 500 wheels are wrapped in Goodyear radial tires. It is fully documented with SAAC paperwork that validates this car as a genuine 1966 Shelby GT350H.

This GT350H is believed to be one of the very few Wimbledon White with Lemans Blue Stripes, which makes it stand out from the other 999 Hertz rentals in the world. It is a rare and unique chance to own one of the most desirable color combinations that was offered on the 1966 Shelby GT350H.
