Hertz "Rent-a-Racer"

The "Rent-a-Racer" program provided by Shelby and Hertz was a promotional idea to get the Shelby Mustang in the hands of car enthusiasts to really show off the cars potential. It worked, almost too well!! The stories are still rampant about cars being rented on Friday, having their engines used in personal race cars, the Shelby's themselves having full roll cages installed for the weekend for racing, and people replacing the Hi-Po Shelby engine for a generic Ford 289 4 barrel and returning it to Hertz!!!

Shipped to Gaudin Motors in Las Vegas Nevada in January of 1966, this black/gold stripe Shelby GT350H would spend its tenure as a rental car in the favourable Nevada climate before being sold to a private owner in California. According the Shelby World Registry, it is in the sunny state of California that this Hertz car would remain before being acquired by Legendary Motorcar Company. The car has been tastefully restored over the course of its existence with the black/gold stripe paint showing beautifully. Close inspection of the details reveals that this car features the numbers matching Hi-Po 289 engine, now attached to a T-10 4 speed transmission. The car has the correct Hertz look right down to the 14" Chrome Magnum 500 wheels with Hertz center caps wrapped in Blueline white letter tires. Looking inside the car the first thing you notice is of course the signature of the legend himself, Carroll Shelby, on the glove box door; next you notice the Shelby specific dash mounted tach, wood rimmed steering wheel and racing belts. This car has benefited from great climate and great care since the day it finished its duties as a rental car, the results are a fantastic original Shelby GT350H, setup beautifully with the 4 speed transmission, ready to be driven, enjoyed and treasured for years to come.
