First-generation Ford Mustangs were manufactured from April 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang, under the leadership of the famous Lee Iacocca, created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. From the April 17th 1964 debut at the World’s Fair the Mustang’s styling with its long hood and short deck proved wildly popular and inspired a host of imitators. 1966 was the last year of the initial body style of Ford's Mustang and the ’66 Mustang GT Fastback had evolved into a very special muscle car. The fastback body version was born with the early Shelby Mustang having the swept back rear glass and distinctive ventilation louvers. The Mustang GT version was first introduced as the "GT Equipment Package" powered by a 289 4-bbl/225hp and having special features such as the grille-mounted fog lamps, rocker panel stripes, and disc brakes. While the GT interior provided a different instrument panel design with five very appealing round dials. The “Interior Decor Group” was popularly known as "Pony Interior" because of the herd of embossed running ponies within the front bucket seat insert and also came with integral armrests and woodgrain appliqués. Another great offering from Ford was the Rally-Pac which was a combination clock and tachometer mounted for strategic viewing onto the steering column while providing a fabulous look. The 1966 Mustang debuted with moderate trim changes including a new grille. The 1965 front grille used a "honeycomb" pattern, while the 1966 version was a "slotted" style. Both model years used the "Horse and Corral" grille emblem with the ‘65 having four bars extending from each side of the corral while on the ‘66 these bars were removed. The side ornamentation also changed as the vertical piece of chrome on the quarter-panels behind the doors was smaller in height and now had three horizontal bars. Ford's new C-4 "Cruise-o-matic" three-speed auto transmission became available for the 225hp V8.
This magnificent Ford Mustang was built January 26, 1966 at the San Jose Plant for the Los Angeles District Sales Office. This “R” Code Mustang has the famous and highly desirable “A” Code 289 4V/225 HP engine mated to the Dual Range C-4 Automatic Transmission with shifter in a full console. Power is delivered through the Styled Steel Wheels mounted on BF Goodrich Radial TA tires while the wonderful sound plays through the Dual Trumpet Exhaust Pipes. This fastback is absolutely stunning in its Code “X” Vintage Burgundy exterior with the luxury Parchment Pony interior. This well restored Mustang has all the features of the GT Equipment Group. Inside comfort includes Power Brakes, Power Steering, Deluxe Steering Wheel, Rally-Pac Steering Column Mounted Tach/Clock “aka” rally pack, Courtesy Light Group, fog lights, AM/8-Track Radio, Deluxe Seat Belts, Tinted Glass, Driver Remote/Dual Mirrors, Day/Nite Rear View Mirror, inside Remote Trunk Release and Sport Deck Fold-Down Rear Seat. Of course the best comfort feature is the factory FoMoCo Air Conditioning unit mounted under the dash which certainly is a very rare option back in the day. This ‘Stang is definitely the complete package of styling and performance within a desirable and collectable first generation Mustang Fastback.
A 1966 Ford advertisement suggested that “If you thought we couldn’t improve on a winner - try Mustang ‘66”. This classy Mustang provides it all with “A” Code 289 and fabulous GT Fastback style.
