1964 Corvette Stingray Coupe
Daytona Blue - 327 .The name Corvette put America back on the sports car map and Corvette owners in a class by themselves. The Chevrolet Corvette (C2 for Second Generation), also known as the Corvette Stingray, is the American sports car legend produced for the 1963 to 1967 model years. The radical exterior styling of this Corvette generation was very purposeful, with peaked fenders, a long nose, and a short, bobbed tail that Chevrolet designers bragged about as 'looks most stylists would be too timid to even suggest'. Quad headlamps were now hidden - the first American car so equipped since the 1942 DeSoto and the 1936-37 Cords. The lamps were mounted in rotating sections that matched the sharp-edged front end with the "eyes" closed. Corvette continued to use the iconic hidden headlamps until the C6 model debuted in 2005. Coupe doors were cut into the roof, which made entry/exit easier in such a low-slung closed car. The Stingray's interior carried a new interpretation of the twin-cowl Corvette dash motif used since 1958. A full set of round gauges included a huge speedometer and tachometer. The control tower center was now somewhat slimmer containing the clock and a vertically situated radio.
For 1964 Chevrolet made only evolutionary changes to the Corvette. Besides the coupe's backbone window, the two simulated air intakes were eliminated from the hood, though their indentations remained. Also, the decorative air-exhaust vent on the coupe's rear pillar was made functional, but only on the left side. Inside, the original color-keyed steering wheel rim was now done in simulated walnut. The spare tire was in a drop-down fiberglass housing beneath the big gas tank which now held 20 gallons instead of 16. The large round deck emblem fuel-filler flap for '64 gained concentric circles around its crossed-flags insignia. Corvette also had spectacular new chassis/suspension refinements in both the front coil springs and rear leaf springs thus providing a more comfortable ride with no sacrifice in handling. Sales of the 1964 Stingray reached 22,229 - another new Corvette record - with only 8304 Coupes built.
A '64 Chevy advertisement stated that 'All Corvette asks is your full attention and about five miles. Before long you'll discover talents you never knew you had. You'll also be aware of what a kick this long-striding wildebeeste delivers'.
This 1964 Corvette was built in mid-April '64 at the St. Louis plant. The Coupe looks fearsome and ready to rumble in beautiful dark Daytona Blue. The distinctive stance of the Stingray is unmistakable as it sits on those wicked big knock-off cast aluminum rims mounted on classic Uniroyal Tiger Paw XTM Royal Seal period-correct white and gold line stripe tires. This stunning Stingray is powered by 327 Turbo Fire 300 hp V8 and has Powerglide automatic transmission. This machine puts performance first and with curb weight for the Coupe at only 3,150 pounds the muscle under the hood delivers a sensational ride.
The Corvette's forte was good balance of acceleration and handling which is the sensation offered the driver sitting in the strictly for business cockpit bucket seat. The Silver interior with the soft genuine leather bucket seats provides a reasonable dose of luxury for your personal driving comfort. As the driver and passenger look over the black dash Chevy has even provided a slot in the dash to help the passenger hang on during the driving experience. For the Corvette driver there is something about placing the hand firmly on the shifter while watching that mechanical tachometer jostle up and down at idle that makes driving a mid-year Corvette a real experience. This Stingray has an interesting line-up of production options including Power Steering/Brakes, Knock-Off Wheels, Delco AM-FM Radio, Back-Up Lamps and Power Windows with the Soft-Ray Tinted Glass surrounding the interior. Two added features to this Coupe are vintage Air Conditioning for comfort and the distinctive Side-Mounted Exhaust enhancing the bold look of the classic Corvette.
Back in '64 Chevrolet proudly stated, "Any pleasure a car can give, Corvette gives you - sedate to snarly" and this Daytona Blue Corvette definitely will provide the next owner with that range of excitement!
