1963 Plymouth Savoy Max Wedge - 1 Of Only 18 Ever Built, 426ci Max Wedge
LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1963 Plymouth Savoy Max Wedge\
As Chrysler was heavily involved in NHRA Super Stock drag racing, the 1963 racing season brought several significant changes, the most important being a new ruling that limited stock-bodied competition engines to seven liters (427.16 CI). As this change went into effect, Detroit automakers participating actively in those series quickly made displacement accommodations to reach the new number.
Chrysler took the standard 413 CI RB block design and enlarged the bore from 4.19 inches to 4.25 inches. This increase in bore size allowed them to achieve an increase to 426 CI, a number that would be synonymous with the company for the remainder of the performance era and down through today. The Maximum Performance engine (or Max Wedge for short) featured redesigned heads and valvetrain, a special intake that used Chrysler’s secretive “ram tuning” technology and dual 4-barrel carburetors, and better driveline equipment.
In May of 1963 this car was delivered to Des Swifenbank, owner of Des Redwood Motors of Garberville, CA. The car has been well cared for since new and not known to have been formally raced in major track competition, hence it remains in outstanding overall condition. The car came equipped with an trunk mounted battery, 426/415hp 11.1 compression engine, cross ram dual 4-barrel manifold, two carter 625cfm carburetors, upswing exhaust manifolds with 3" head pipes and factory exhaust cutouts, heavy duty TorqueFlite push-button transmission, 3.91 Sure-Grip limited-slip rear end and hood brace delete.
As Mopar dominated Super Stock racing in the 60’s, this Plymouth Savoy is great reminder of the performance era where Chrysler engineers ruled. 1 of only 18 1963 426 Plymouth Savoy 2 door sedans (Stage 1) cars ever produced. Documented in Darrell Davis' book.
