1962 Chevrolet Corvette
Chevrolet Corvette (C1) is the first generation of the now classic Corvette sports car introduced late in the 1953 model year and produced through 1962. It is commonly referred to as the "solid-axle" generation, as the independent rear suspension did not appear until the 1963 Sting Ray. In 1961, the rear of the car was completely redesigned with the addition of a "duck tail" with the now iconic four round lights. This tail light treatment would continue for all following model years of Corvettes. The most noticeable exterior changes for 1962 were the removal of the side cover chrome trim. Without the trim bright work, it was not possible to offer the coves in a contrasting color so for the first time since 1955 Corvettes were offered in solid colors only. A blacked-out grille and ribbed chrome rocker panel molding were new. The standard features now included an electric clock, dual exhaust, tachometer, heater and defroster, seat belts, outside rearview mirror and windshield washer. This was also the last year for features like the wrap around windshield, convertible-only body style, trunk lid and exposed headlamps that did not reappear for many decades. The most significant new feature was the Small-Block was enlarged to 327 cu in which in standard form produced 250 bhp.
This beautifully restored ‘62 Corvette is finished in the distinctive Roman Red with a new Al Knoch Black interior and a new Black Convertible Top. Powered by a matching number 327 c.i. 300 horsepower V8 restoration engine with the high horse aluminum Corvette script valve covers. Other convenient features include the Wonderbar Radio, Clock, Seat Belts and full size chrome Spinner Hubcaps. This great cruising roadster has benefited from a number of tasteful and professionally executed upgrades, all in the pursuit of better driving, handling, braking and enjoyment. Improvements included are Power Steering via an assisted rack and pinion by Steeroids, Front Disc Brakes installed replacing the drum brakes, the installation for safety of a Dual Master Brake Cylinder and the truly enjoyable upgrade to a Tremec 5-Speed Manual Transmission with a new stock appearing T-handle Shifter. New Goodyear tires and shocks were recently installed. This vehicle has seen much care and maintenance in its long term and same owner for 24 years.
The Corvette advertisements in ’62 suggested ‘Don’t sit down unless you mean business!’ and ‘Get in, Sit Down, Disappear!’ down the road. This 1962 Roman Red Corvette Roadster with the 327/300HP is a well sorted and excellent driving example of the last year for the C1 Corvettes.
