1957 Plymouth Fury Two Door Coupe - Dual Four Barrels
LMC is proud to offer for sale this wonderful 1957 Plymouth Fury.
The Plymouth Fury was produced by Chrysler from 1956 to 1978. The Fury was introduced as a sporty, premium priced model designed as the top-of-the-line flagship model of the Plymouth brand.
The Fury was a sub-series of the Plymouth Belvedere from 1956 through 1958. The work of art by the very famous car designer of the time, Virgil Exner. He retained his previous off-white and gold color scheme as his name became a household word. The '57 Fury was so much more sculptured, slim and sleek with the 'Forward Look' compared to the Ford and Chevy designs.
The two-door coupe was sold only as an 'Egg Shell', the color description in the '57 brochure, 2-door hardtop coupe with gold anodized aluminum trim. The Fury had a special interior, bumper wing-guards and a V8 engine with twin 4-barrel carburetors producing 290 hp. The '57 models were completely restyled; longer, wider, with very large vertical tailfins and a brand new front suspension, composed of torsion bars instead of coil springs. Like its lesser line mates, the Fury rode a 118-inch wheelbase and measured a startling 5.5 inches lower. The dramatic new styling boosted sales with base price still under $3,000 but most 1957s went out the door at around $3,500. This model year production was 7,438 but despite that number you rarely ever see them these days. As well the Plymouth Fury gained mega popularity when Stephen King cast a '58 Fury as Christine, the Evil Coupe.
Advertisements that model year had Plymouth stating 'Who says tomorrow never comes? -- You're looking at it! The car you expected in 1960 is here today'. The future was definitely to be finned monsters of the road and Plymouth showcased the stylish wings and performance"¦proudly 'three years ahead'.
'Fury' denotes a type of anger and comes from the Furies, the mythological Greek entities who doled out vengeance to the wicked. This describes the sports car power Plymouth bragged about. It may look like a classic 50s cruiser but with the dual four barrel carbs feeding the 318 under the hood this car was known for performance too. Dubbed "V-800" this power plant delivered a hefty 290 horsepower. The fully detailed engine bay has a nice finish and has the stock style paint. It is one of those motors that doesn't need a bunch of chrome to look cool just the valve covers. The original style of the two Gold air cleaners are incredibly unique as they sit off set on top of the bright blue engine. Mated to the motor is the original push button 3-speed Torqueflite Transmission which is a very neat feature to operate. After start up this Fury settles into a nice smooth rumble provided via the dual exhaust. These Plymouths were known for the great handling with Chrysler's new corporate-wide torsion-bar independent front suspension. Advertisements suggested it provided effortless high-speed cruising, competence on rough surfaces, and a new level of handling precision.
Typically when you think tail fins you picture cars designed in the late 1950's or early 60's. This 1957 Plymouth Fury utilizes some of the coolest tail fins ever designed. The 2 door hardtop body is coated in the Sand Dune White which is in very good condition and truly enhances the classic lines. These come from a daringly low belt line providing acres of glass. This is combined with stainless and anodized gold trim for an awesome view from the side. The flowing lines of the hardtop are enhanced by the ribbed chrome panel that runs along the window tops and through the very narrow roof pillar. The front of the car has the Exner gold grill between the quad headlights. The front bumper is very nicely shaped over the vented body center panel. At either end of the of the bright chrome bumper are winged Bumperettes on the outside corners. This is the same style incorporated into the rear bumpers. The rear taillights are tucked perfectly in the shape of the tail fin. Also featured on the back end are dual swoop-back aerials on either side of the rear deck that have a similar angle as the trunk lid when in the open position. Along the side are dual chrome mirrors and flush mounted door handles. The final accent touch to the side view are the stunning chrome spoke wheels that spin the period correct wide white wall tires. All of the chrome has a mirror like finish. Overall the chrome touches are not excessive just very tastefully placed within the Exner design. The glass is in great shape.
The driver opens the solid fitting door and sits on the brown cloth patterned insert of the front bench seat. The entire interior of this classic is done in a combination of white and beige - a very nice harmony of those tones. The front seat has that famous Chrysler split seat back that has a larger driver side section to fold out of the way for much better access to the rear seat. The upholstery and interior components are immaculate transporting you back to the 50s. While all around the top of the doors is a wide chrome plate only found in the luxury cars. Things like the original gauges and steering wheel just go to show how much time went into designing cars back in the day. The two-tone brown and ivory steering wheel is beautiful in design while allowing the driver full uninterrupted view of the gauges. The center cap of the steering wheel has a 'sweep second self-regulating watch' and the driver has the single instrument cluster right in front for ease as he/she travels down the highway. On the left side of the dash and in front of the 'Fury' script on the door panel is the push button automatic transmission controls set in the gold trim. The rear view mirror is mounted on the dash of these Mopars just above the AM Radio. A lot of the interior knobs, switches and buttons are done in gold giving it a nice finishing touch of class.
Plymouth back in the day advertised for 'His love of sports cars. Her love of beauty and comfort' to promote the stylish Fury. Today car fans and collectors admire the Plymouth Fury for the beauty, rarity and power.
