1957 International S110 LWB Longbed
Beautifully Restored Rare and Seldom Seen Model .The International Harvester Company, abbreviated as IH, was an agricultural machinery, construction equipment, commercial truck, and household/commercial products manufacturer. In 1902, J. P. Morgan merged the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company to form International Harvester. International Harvester sold off its agricultural division in 1985 and renamed itself Navistar International Corporation in 1986 to build big-rig transport trucks and the International XT Extreme Pickup.
Famous for its durable farm equipment, International Harvester also made quality trucks for decades. They were known to have rugged dependability by those fiercely loyal to the brand. In 1957 IH celebrated fifty years in the truck business and it was the custom to designate each new line of truck with a letter. The S-Series nameplate was entering the second model year of production. S-Series was available primarily as light-duty pickup and medium-duty trucks and these famed workhorse pickups had a distinct look all to themselves. The stylish new front end was a big departure from the past models that enhanced the wide stance of the headlights and provided a new bold grill design with that distinctive open mouth look. The hood continued as a lift-off unit. Running boards still were important to the truck buyer of the day and the panoramic windshield plus the solid/1 piece rear window meant the design was more up to date for the latter half of the fifties.
Make no mistake this International Pickup is a Pickup like they used to look like and what they were intended to be: an operator's cab and an engine compartment dragging a box around. Back in the day, IH advertised the pickup with 'Loadability plus driving comfort'
This S110 example offered here was a complete frame-off restoration top to bottom and is in beautiful condition throughout - even better than delivered from the factory. It's a rare IH as it was the last Series of Pickup before the 'new smooth-sided pickup' style war started with all the pickup truck manufacturers in the late 1950's. This International was purchased out of Monterey California and has that no frills, no nonsense, rugged and dependable look of a Pickup Truck.
Handsomely finished in the original traditional Harvester Red with Canyon Black Grill/Bumper/Running Board paint scheme this S-110 LWB Pickup sold new for $1794. Paint has great depth with glowing shine and has a show quality presentation. Beautiful detail in the air-brush script of 'War Horse' above the huge rear window which is tastefully framed on each side by an Eagle Feather and captures the essence of this former work horse of a pickup. Also the restored undercarriage is clean, nicely detailed, reflects the red/black paint scheme and is definitely ready for inspection at a show. Inside a spotless engine compartment this truck has a 240 cu. in. six producing a powerful 131 Gross HP, as noted on the door plate, with manual transmission. IH trucks were noteworthy for their light manual steering and this was significant because power steering in pickups was the exception in those days. Black wall tires are mounted on Gloss Black rims with Red pinstripes and Chrome IH Caps. The box-side-mounted spare tire completes the 50's look.
Inside a comfortable Grey Cloth/Vinyl Bench Seat awaits the driver to experience IH road ability. The interior compartment is in the same Red/Black scheme as the exterior and definitely reflects the made-for-business style of these IH Pickups. The driver faces a beautiful deep gloss black dash with sparkling chrome control knobs, radio and chrome glove box door/ashtray cover plate. Also mounted to the lower edge of the dash are the Oil Pressure and Tachometer. The impressive size of the dash controls and door handles/cranks suggest they were definitely ready for heavy duty work. As well the driver has large dual hinge-mounted side mirrors. The interior cabin is in immaculate condition.
Before Pickups became self-conscious about being attractive and back when "pickup" just meant "truck""¦this beautiful '57 International S110 LWB Pickup was very desirable and remains so today. Like the IH advertisement boasted 'One look, one drive will convince you!'
