1956 Nomad
The Chevrolet Nomad is perhaps the prettiest wagon ever built and a car with immense, longtime appeal simply because it is among the most classic designs of all time. Though generally credited to General Motors design's Harley Earl, its actual creators were Chevrolet studio head Clare MacKichan and stylist Carl Renner. The MacKichan group had suggested a "sport wagon" as an addition to Chevrolet's all-new 1955 line up. It is said that Mr. Renner had come up with a sketch for a station wagon roof that caught Earl's eye. Bringing this idea to the Chevrolet studio, Earl asked that it be incorporated into a station wagon version as one of three Corvette idea cars for the 1954 Motorama. The result was the Corvette Nomad, a non-running prototype with fiberglass bodywork on a 1953 Chevrolet wagon chassis. Renner's roof nicely suited the lower body lines of Chevrolet's recently announced sports car and the name was perfect. This prototype was such a hit at the show that Mr. Earl ordered that the design be part of the conventional full size car line up as soon as possible.
This gorgeous 1956 example was recently acquired from a large collection. It has previously benefitted from a full frame off, authentic restoration and as a result is a previous Antiques Automobile Club of America First Prize Winner. Finished in its correct #754 Tropical Turquoise with India Ivory paint which shows beautifully, this Nomad is powered by the smooth running optional Power Pack 265 CID V8 with 4 barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, rated at 205 HP with Power Glide automatic transmission. Completing the authentic original look of this car are the period correct wide wall tires on wheels fitted with the one year only design chrome hub caps. The matching interior is done in factory correct # 594 Light Turquoises with grey inserts that works beautifully with body colors, generous chrome and the padded dashboard with optional tissue dispenser. Equipped with a fully functional tail gate with flip up window, the Nomad was the SUV of its day. The longer you examine this car, the better it gets. From The unmistakable combination of 50's style and colors to the copious quantities of stunning chrome, it is no surprise these cars are one of the most desirable wagons of all time. Don't miss your chance to buy this show stopper.
