1953 Buick Super Estate Wagon - Restored Last Year for the Real Wood Wagons
LMC is extremely proud to offer this 1953 Buick Super Estate Wagon.
Buick Super, produced from 1940 to 1958, shared Buick's larger body with the famous Roadmaster. The 1953 Buick Super was part of a celebration year in Detroit -- Buick and Ford were celebrating their 50th birthday. Long a symbol of upper-middle-class affluence, Buick ran its traditional fourth in postwar production by continuing to offer attractive styling, smooth performance, and near-Cadillac luxury.
For Buick buyers 1953 was an important milestone as the end of an ear came with the introduction of the first V8 powered Buick. The long standing Straight Eight power plants that Buick owners affectionately referred to as 'Eight in a row makes 'em go' were retired. Now the Vee in the bombsight hood ornament signified the new engine. Another first was the 12-volt electrics. The Super was built with the larger C-body and shared the 121.5 in wheelbase. Body design was still distinctively Buick with the unique style of using three chrome VentiPorts on each front fender to denote its smaller engine when compared with the Roadmaster. The full flowing fender line dipped deeper on this body and rear fenders had a rear crest line absent on the B-body Specials. Interiors were cloth except on convertibles and Estate Wagons which were trimmed with leather. The Super used a different instrument panel than the Special distinguished by a large center speedometer housing flanked by smaller gauge housings. Series identification was found on the deck emblem. Full wheel covers and the Dynaflow were now standard equipment. A total of 190,514 Supers came from the factory but only 1,830 were the Buick Model 59 Estate Wagon which was GM's top luxury station wagon. Unfortunately, last year for this wagon model making it rare and desirable for collectors.
General Motors knew the distinguished Buick owners demanded a car that made a big bold statement in terms of recognizable class in styling with eight cylinders of power. On the other hand every true 'Buick Man' had confidence that GM would deliver on the slogan the company had used over the decades - When Better Automobiles Are Built, BUICK Will Build Them.
"Wood" you be interested in a classic Buick Wagon? This is a gorgeous 1953 Buick Super Estate Wagon in bright Matador Red/Wood panels that easily answers the question with 'Yes you should!'
Starting under the hood that has the big chrome V8 bombsight, sits the new for Buick venture into the world of V-8 power. This V-8 was known as the Nailhead, an OHV 322 cid providing 170 bhp and utilizing the 2-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission. The Buick brochure suggested "It's Twin-Turbine Dynaflow for Flash-Away Acceleration!" The Buick Green V8 is nestled nicely between the satin black fenders in front of the red cowl. The engine bay is very nicely detailed and shows the nice conveniences of the Trico Windshield Washer bottle, the long and narrow Delco Battery and the remote hood release latch. Through the comfortable Buick suspension, front: upper and lower A-arms, coil springs with rear: live axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs the ride is a floating cloud. The dealer brochure proudly stated 'Buick's Greatest Cars in 50 Great Years'. In particular this Estate Wagon certainly lived up to the advertisement suggestion if you 'Like a lot of room with your power'.
From the first glance at the waterfall chrome style grill you easily recognize that famous Buick look. The bold letters of BUICK in the chrome with a big oval chrome surround for the Red Buick logo is recessed into the front of the hood to let everyone know this was a well to do Buick owner. The massive wrap around chrome bumpers, front and back have large bullet style bumper guards with the back-up lights sitting inside the rear bullets. With this amount of chrome it has to be very good and it is. The Matador Red is rich and has great depth representative of a quality restoration. The front fenders have the familiar three-vents defining the Super model. Along the side are dual chrome mirrors and the styling is enhanced by bright chrome flashing and spears to highlight the lines. The light colored Ash frame the Mahogany dark wood panels that starts under the front door then swoops down and up under the side windows to blend into the rear deck doors. The full artistic beauty of this classic Woody Wagon is from the tail gate view. A carpenter's work of art in the all wood paneling for the business entrance to the storage area. The lift up glass door is framed in the thick light colored Ash wood while the lower fold down door is framed in the light wood with dark Mahogany wood panels. The wonderful wood paneling has been correctly restored with the richness of the different types of wood. All the wood is in excellent condition and provides a great reflective shine. In the center of the dark wood rear panel is the familiar large Buick Super emblem that had adorned the rear deck of all Buicks since the late thirties. The wheels are another extension of the chrome theme with a large two-prong spinner with the Buick colors in the center of the thick chrome spoke wheels.
The Red/White interior is large and spacious with the Buick touch of class throughout this 4-door Wagon. The 6-passenger seating area is predominantly in Red with White panels along the seat tops with matching door panels and red carpet. Rear seat has a gloss black railing across the entire seat. The driver slips behind the Black Steering Wheel having the Super Red/White/Blue in the center of the horn ring and the Automatic Column Shifter - for driver safety a need to note the PNDLR indicator. In front the driver is the Black top/ metal dash that wraps around to blend into the doors with an impressive sight of large round instruments and Sonomatic Selectronic AM Radio dressed in full chrome. There is the familiar antenna knob to swing the radio aerial up for reception and down for entering the garage. Also the convenience of a day/night Rear View mirror. The entire interior compartment is in wonderful condition with bright chrome and clear gauges.
