1939 Packard Convertible Coupe

Documented One Owner since 1949 - AACA Winner

Packard was the leading luxury marquee at the beginning of the Classic Car era. It was one of the oldest car companies in America, dating back to the first Packard rolling out of the factory in 1899. The company began life as the Ohio Automobile Company based in Warren, Ohio. It became the Packard Motor Car Company in 1902 and moved to Detroit, the heart of the burgeoning auto industry, in 1903. As an exclusive producer of expensive, luxury cars, Packard was struggling through the Great Depression. In an effort to expand production volume in the late 1930's, the company introduced a new line of cars featuring Packard's first application of independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes, and it carried the prestige of the Packard name. The Packard One-Ten was also commonly referred to as the 110.  It was a range of six-cylinder automobiles introduced in 1937 and built on a shorter wheelbase than the senior Packard's.  The One-Ten was available in a broad range of body styles, including both two and four-door sedans, station wagon and convertible. As a result, Packard customers expected a smooth, silent and ultra-refined engine and the Packard 1700 Series Model 110 certainly delivered on those requirements.

While other marques adopted more sweeping contours the Packard's - including the 110 - retained a more traditional upright look.  This was befitting a maker that built its fortune on luxury cars.  This 1939 Packard 110 - listed in the day as 'the popular open weather body type' - was the Convertible Coupe for two or four passengers priced at $1104.  This is a splendid example and displays so well in the familiar French Blue and Red combination.

Power is delivered by an L-head six-cylinder engine which displaced 245 cubic-inches and produced 100 horsepower for a top speed of 75mph.  These Packard's, sitting on a 122" wheelbase; deliver a smooth driving experience and very comfortable ride just as the Packard Company claimed in the 1939 advertisements - "Combining Super Performance & Super Luxury with Extraordinary Nimbleness".  It has a three-speed selective synchromesh transmission with column-mounted gearshift controls.  The Six also conformed to Packard's reputation for quality and style. They had an all-steel body, independent 'Safe-T-fleX' front suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic operated drum brakes. The 1939 Packard Six offered here is accessorized with a factory 'Packard Custom' radio, 'Packard Standard' heater, dashboard clock and famous Packard Goddess of Speed hood ornament.  The rich red leather interior is in outstanding restored condition with the driver surrounded by an impressive wood grain dash and door plates.

This Packard Convertible Coupe has magnificent fit and finish both inside and out that will definitely appeal to the next owner.  Impressive in the French Blue with the period correct wide white wall tires mounted on the pin-striped red rims with the chrome accent trim rings.  The tan convertible top has the tailored look of distinction contributing to the natural curb appeal of this great Packard.

There is documentation from most recent/second owner, who bought the Packard after coming out WWII service in the 1940's, that describes how the Packard became part of the lives of each family member and their vacation driving around the US and Canada. The previous owner's purchase Bill of Sale, the original car manual, service and parts receipts from the 1950's till today, restoration payments are all part of the explanation of how well this car was looked after during the six and a half decades of ownership.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a real excellent pre-war Packard that was preserved by one proud owner/Packard enthusiast for the last 65 years.
